Influencing Public Policy: Enhancing the Voice of Safety Net Hospitals

In the coming months, policymakers across the country will make decisions that could profoundly alter the course of funding that supports the critical work you do to care for your communities. Your response to these threats is crucial to your hospital’s path forward. Learn how to seize advocacy opportunities, influence decision makers, and tell your positive story at the 2013 Government Relations Academy.

This valuable educational series involves three highly interactive sessions at the 2013 NAPH Spring Legislative Event, Annual Conference, and Fall Legislative Event.

All participants will earn a "Graduate of the 2013 NAPH Government Relations Academy" certificate.

Session 1
Understanding Safety Net Issues and Washington
March 18–20, 2013 | Washington, DC
(Held in conjunction with the NAPH Spring Legislative Event. Academy participants will attend private “GR Academy” sessions Monday-Tuesday and join the NAPH membership Tuesday-Wednesday)

This session will outline the key legislative and regulatory challenges NAPH member hospitals currently face and those expected in the future. It will provide an in-depth explanation of safety net financing and the various mechanisms states use to fund hospitals that care for the most vulnerable. The session also will include the history and evolution of effective advocacy in Washington and an advanced overview of the congressional and regulatory processes. Hear from policy experts and lobbyists to gain a greater understanding of how Washington works, and learn about effective tactics to impact public policy!

Engaging Your Stakeholders and Telling Your Story
June 18 – 21, 2013 | Hollywood, Fla.
(Held in conjunction with the NAPH Annual Conference. Academy participants will attend private "GR Academy" sessions Tuesday-Wednesday and join the NAPH membership Wednesday-Friday)

This session will focus on building networks of grassroot and grasstop supporters and engaging stakeholders in your community. Communications experts will help you better convey your story through advanced lobbying techniques, effective messaging, and meaningful storytelling that enlightens and educates stakeholders, policymakers, and your community about the crucial role of your hospital.

Session 3
Running Successful Advocacy Campaigns
Sept. 30 – Oct. 2, 2013 | Washington, DC
(Held in conjunction with the NAPH Fall Legislative Event)

This session will highlight key lessons from successful advocacy campaigns. Working with peers, you will use these lessons as a framework to design an individualized, high-quality advocacy campaign that will benefit your hospital.

Program Cost
- Tuition is $4,000, which includes three in-person learning sessions, access to leading experts, coaching, curriculum materials, some meals, networking events, and distance learning activities between sessions.
- Tuition also includes registration for the 2013 NAPH conferences: Spring Legislative Event, Annual Conference, and Fall Legislative Event (a $1,000 value).
- Each participant’s sponsoring organization is responsible for travel and lodging expenses.
CEU Credits

NAPH is authorized to award pre-approved Category II (non-ACHE) continuing education credit toward advancement or recertification in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Credit hours are determined according to the program and content for each conference.
