University Medical Center of El Paso
University Medical Center of El Paso, formerly Thomason Hospital, a part of the El Paso County Hospital District’s health care system, is the largest public hospital located directly on the U.S./Mexico border. It is home to the only Level 1 Trauma Center within a 280-mile radius of El Paso. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center designated the hospital as its primary teaching facility in 1973—it is the only teaching hospital in the West Texas/Southern New Mexico region. In FY 2008, more than 5,000 babies were born in the hospital’s new birthing center, placing it among the busiest hospitals nationally for number of deliveries. University Medical Center is a regional referral center for high-risk pregnant women and neonates, and it’s home to a state-of-the-art Level 3 Intensive Care Nursery staffed 24/7 by board-certified neonatologists.
